So, just a short little rant today but one I’m sure will resonate with many of you!
I am currently a full-time mum. When I was pregnant I was told that my contract would not be renewed so I wouldn’t have a job the following year. Thanks to UK employment law they still had to give me maternity pay (result!) but it was pretty stressful at the time. Even so, I’m not sure I’d have gone back. I was in educational support and the pay was quite low, so nursery fees would have basically cancelled it out. Still, I don’t feel unemployed. I am definitely working, 7 days a week as a matter of fact!
So, when it comes to filling in forms for insurance and what not I resent having to select the box that says ‘unemployed’ and then the subsection ‘housewife’, or ‘homemaker/houseperson’ on the more enlightened forms. For one thing I’m a mother, but my husband I make our home together. We both sort of the bills, we both do laundry and cleaning, we both cook. My job is to look after my son, who says cleaning the loo goes along with that? So this form I came across today really took the biscuit:
Not working? Homemaker/incapacitated etc?? How is that even a category?
That is all.
